Using a cooperative approach to design and planning, UDLA were part of a multidisciplinary team engaged by Landcorp on behalf of the Shire of East Pilbara to design the Newman Town Centre.
The recent construction of the Newman Town Square provided the final built outcome in a sequential process that engaged the stakeholders, council, community, traditional owners and traditional custodians in a participatory design process to achieve their collective vision.
The three stage process commenced with the Masterplan, which visualised the ‘big picture’ plan for Newman’s future. The Place Management Plan (PMP) then refined the urban design and activation, program and management of the town centre. The PMP provided a framework and addressed the mechanics of how the town works, whilst consolidating community and stakeholder feedback to form a cohesive ‘idea’. The completion of the Town Square concluded the process with a built landscape architectural outcome, providing a unique, inclusive and place specific public realm guided by the needs of the local community.
- A revitalisation plan that identifies Newman as a regional centre;
- A master plan for the future of Newman as a growing hub;
- A Town Square that responds to the unique context of Newman; and
- A contented community due to a successful engagement process
