Geraldton Masterplan

As a continuation of the recently adopted Geraldton Revitalisation Plan, UDLA – together with TCL and Chaney Architects (now TRCB) – were engaged by the City of Greater Geraldton to prepare a Masterplan for the Geraldton City Centre.

Map and extents of Geraldton’s City Centre - the area of focus.

As Western Australia’s third largest city, Geraldton has significant natural and built assets. Its city centre is unique in WA, being directly adjacent to the foreshore. The Masterplan capitalises on the opportunity to better connect the foreshore to the CBD.

The Masterplan proposes a stronger arrival sequence for those entering the city centre along Cathedral Avenue and significantly improving the overall tree canopy of the CBD.

The masterplan proposes bold but credible changes to key intersections and public realm areas along with opportunities for new development.

Key breakout zones illustrated for Geraldton’s Masterplan Zone include:
1. Port Arrival
2. The Heart
3. The Rocks Laneway
4. East End
5. The Gateway
6. The Entry

Six major zones were addressed from concept phase to development maximise the city’s potential and optimise tourism and opportunities for future development.

Key zones identified were associated with arrival of increase in density during increases in visitors to the city, as well as accommodating foot traffic. The Rocks Laneway project is one of the six zones that has already been delivered. As an urban pathway that connects the city centre to the waterfront, it has succeeded at drawing people in.

The team presented the draft Masterplan directions to the Concept Design Forum in Geraldton which helped enable the support of the proposals by elected members of the City.

The continued implementation of this Masterplan will continue to improve the connections between the city centre and Champion Bay, making the most of its unrivaled natural and built heritage assets.
