Subi East is one of the most significant urban infill redevelopment projects in Western Australia’s built environment history. Once complete, it will be a well-connected inner-city village and new gateway to the Perth CBD that will provide homes to more than 4,000 new residents.

UDLA, with design partner OCULUS, are proud to be providing the landscape architectural services from concept design through to detailed design, documentation and construction services for the 35Ha city village – which includes the former Subiaco Oval site and the former Princess Margaret Hospital site.

Four key design moves were established to assist in setting a clear spatial direction for the project and to build consensus across multiple stakeholders. Overlaying these moves created the bones of the masterplan – a set of simple, agreed key connections and spaces that guided further detailed design of the public realm.

The overarching masterplan for the entire site is drawn together by the Bidi – a trail that celebrates the Noongar six seasons and their relationship with all natural and cultural heritage on site. Together with generously-scaled vegetated corridors and streetscapes, the Bidi connects up the numerous public realm community spaces within the precinct to provide an immersive experience for visitors to learn about Noongar knowledge, culture and history, which has been led by the Subi East Elder Group and Karrda Designs.

The Bidi Trail will include a series of Bidi Markers that are being created by six Noongar artists, with public art coordination by Apparatus.

Numerous elements have been integrated and designed into the public realm to celebrate WA’s football history, including the Sandover Medal walk with the Subiaco Oval precinct – a reinterpretation of the Sandover Medalist pavers that previously were located outside Subiaco Oval. This element has been developed in collaboration with Studio Field.

In 2018, UDLA was engaged to explore and develop potential public realm and connectivity outcomes, in collaboration with Hames Sharley, TBB and Calibre. The resulting business case document was used to support financial planning, stakeholder engagement and briefing for future stages. Image by Hames Sharley

Once complete, Subi East will be “a connected city village honouring traditions and living memories; a place for whole of life city living, for all generations.”
